METHOD EDUCATION | November 2019

CARTER | MILLER hillcrest had the honor and privilege of hosting a 3-day Hands-On Transcend + Color.Profiling training for the staff. The shape of the head, the bones and muscles of the skull, and various hair textures were all discussed in a morning theory class, meant to explore new angles and refresh required clinical terminology. James Abu-Ulba, from Vancouver, BC trekked to Little Rock to head-up the intensive class. The Color Director for Method Education is our very own Alicia Miller, so naturally, we made him feel right at home.

Just because we were in Alicia’s home base, did not mean that either of them went easy on us. Also, we didn’t want to let Alicia down. The staff put a lot of pressure on themselves to excel and make her proud.

The biggest topics covered:

-What inspires you and how to find inspiration

-Finding new techniques to invoke creativity

-Refresh from the monotony

-Why we do what we do

-Core Values

The biggest obstacle was inspiring each stylist to step out of their comfort zone. A very daunting task, to say the least. As hairstylists, it’s almost instilled in us to become really good at a signature style and then become fast. Finding your niche in hair is how you build a clientele, but becoming fast is how you make money. James asked us to step outside of that bubble and rethink how the shape of the head, the growth of the hair and the position of the scissors connect with creativity. The medical terminology for the bones and muscles of the head are required by cosmetology standards, but as we grow further away from theory, we tend to stride though the familiar motion of haircutting. James challenged us to go further and take our time to understand the response.

Alicia came behind James’ cutting theory and design to show the extreme importance of color profiling. This involves the face shape, skin tone and the intention of the haircut.

She challenged the class to work on new techniques that, along with various tools, inspire versatile results.

We cannot thank James and Alicia enough for taking the time to inspire us to grow as stylists and explore creativity to new levels. Hopefully, this was the first of many.

“Funny thing about getting out of your comfort zone, you end up learning new things. That’s exactly what we did this week. I was forced to push myself and open up to new things and y’all get to benefit from it. We take education seriously because we take your hair seriously.”⠀

“Did some continuing education earlier this week and to say it challenged me would be a huge understatement. Everyday I doubted myself and my abilities. But you have to lean and experience that from time to time to grow and challenge yourself. It’s ok to visit those times of doubt and fear cause they tell us what we can change and work on but we just don’t need to stay there. I learned so much and will continue to learn with the awesome group of people I get to work with! Thank you so much @lishair and @method_education for being such amazing teachers and so patient with me! 😂” - @linsaythair

“And just like that, day three was done. Thank you so much to @method_education and @lishair for a wonderful training and getting me out of my comfort zone.” - Ashley | @littlerocksmaneevent
